BBC Music, March 2009 '(Excerpt - the full text will be quoted when the review is published.)
Gorecki’s fascination with the West European avant-garde is clear, but he makes elements such as serialist techniques his assistant, not his master. Chamber Domaine’s crisp and tightly-focused playing fully realizes the ascetic dignity of the music.' Barry Witherden Classic FM, March 2009 'Despite the title, this is no facile 'this is your life' compilation. The recital presents compositions from the 1958 concert that launched Gorecki's career, alongside later works from 1971 and the 1990s. Gorecki's first four opus numbers are here, and three of the five 1950s works are premiere recordings. It's a fascinating, beautifully chosen programme, which shows gorecki's stylistic journey from avant-garde, sparse astringency, to his less dissonant, more softly expressive later style. Across the board, Chamber Domaine's performances are precise of attack and brilliant of tone, with a soulfulness that cuts to the heart of even the steelier-sounding works.' Charlotte Gardner Evening Standard, January 2009 'The Polish composer scored the first
million-selling symphonic disc. Here is
some smaller stuff in the same vein,
mutedly devout, often breath-catching in
its beauty. The Requiem for a Polka is
intriguingly ambivalent, mourning either
the dance or the nation it is named after.
Gorgeous playing by Chamber Domaine,
recorded in a Suffolk church, grey as a
January dawn.
