Latest News30/05/2008 For their second release on Landor Records, The Arada Guitar Duo looked to the sun-drenched Mediterranean for inspiration, and have unearthed a fascinating and rare collection of original pieces for two guitars. Their previous release, 2006’s highly successful and widely broadcast ‘Grand Duo’, explored original 19th Century music written for guitar duo. ‘Mediterranean’ is its 20th century counterpart. The musical language comprises rich sonorities, vivid colours, and a range of expression from almost violent drama to sublime peacefulness. All the shades, colours and textures of Mediterranean life are here, from sunrise to sunset, dance to stillness, water to fire, ocean to sky, anguish to joy. Some of the composers featured are household names: Joaquin Rodrigo’s Tonadilla and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Preludes and Fugues have entered the standard guitar repertory. However, as the duo continued to explore this musical world, they unearthed some true rarities, two of them previously unrecorded, by composers such as the Greek Kiriakos Giorginakis and Italian Claudio Decorti, whose beautifully characterful writing deserves a much wider audience. As with ‘Grand Duo’, every note is played exactly as it was written and intended to be heard – there are no arrangements or transcriptions. The Arada Guitar Duo, namely Simon Davies and Nicholas Lee, reached the finals of the inaugural Landor Competition. Simon and Nicholas began playing guitar together in 1992 while studying classical guitar with Gordon Crosskey, John Williams and Craig Ogden. The Arada Guitar Duo perform across the UK and are increasingly in demand at festivals, concert series and music societies. The duo have performed live on BBC radio and their debut disc was played on radio stations all over the world. ‘Mediterranean’ is released on Landor Records on Monday, 30th June 2008. ![]()
